Club America is the most successful club in Mexico and formed in 1916 when players from Récord and Colón met to discuss combining their teams. The meeting of the minds took place on October 12 and by the end of the meeting the new team had finalized the merger as well as deciding on their club name, home jersey colors, and the basis for their club crest that is still used today.

The name America was agreed as the new name of the club. Pedro “Cheto” Quintanilla suggested the name pointing out that the meeting was taking place on Columbus Day and there were celebrations for the discovery of America taking place all over Mexico City.

It took even less time to decide on the club’s new jersey. They were going to use the kit colors of cream (yellow) jersey, blue shorts, and blue socks from Rafael Garza Gutiérrez’ Récord club. The players at the meeting all agreed the uniform was beautiful and there were no other clubs at the time wearing the combination.

The story of how Récord selected the team colors was fate. After calling for players interested in joining the club, Gutiérrez showed up wearing the color combination and the rest was history.

Quintanilla was the inspiration behind the Club America crest. Building on the ‘Americas’ theme, he suggested that a ‘C’ and ‘A’ flank either side illustration of the American continent. It certainly helped the process that Quintanilla was a local artist.

After joining the Mexican Soccer League Amateur Association the changed their name to Unión and included an Eagle on their badge but the reverted back to the original ideas 2 years later and the traditional look as remained.
