Czech Republic National Soccer Team
Two Nations, One Extraordinary Team: the Czechs Have Excelled at World Soccer for Many Decades
Bohemia
Before World War I, Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic), while being part of Austria-Hungary, played seven matches between 1903 and 1908, six of them against Hungary and one against England. Bohemia also played a match against Germany in 1939 while being the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
Czechoslovakia
When the Czech Republic was part of Czechoslovakia, the National Soccer Team began play in 1920 with a convincing 7 to 0 victory over Yugoslavia – which was a harbinger of things to come. The European nation has had much success in the:
The Euro Cup
With players the likes of Antonín Panenka on the squad, in 1976 Czechoslovakia once more defeated archrival Yugoslavia 5 to 3 on penalty shootout, this time to win their first European Championship!
Now, the Czech Republic is continuing the tradition, finishing second in Euro 96, with Karel Poborský (all time leader in games played), Patrick Berger, and Captain Pavel Nedvěd leading the way.
With a wild Euro 2004 romp through the group phase, which included dramatic come-from-behind wins over giants Germany and the Netherlands, Karel Brückner's Czechs proved themselves one of the most resourceful and positive sides of the finals. Tomáš Rosický, Petr Čech, and Milan Baroš (the tournament’s Golden Boot Winner with 5 goals) helped the Czechs finish runners up in Euro 2004.
The Czech Republic has also shined in the world’s biggest soccer stage:
The World Cup
The Czech side qualified to 8 World Cups:
In 1934 they were Runners up in the World Cup with outstanding stars such as Antonín Puč, František Plánička, and Josef "Pepi" Bican.
Josef Masopust (1962 European Footballer of the Year), helped his side gain the second place finish in the 1962 World Cup.
World Cup ‘06
On November 12th, 2005, Tomas Rosicky's goal gave the Czech Republic a 1-0 win over Norway in their playoff second leg on Wednesday and booked their place at next year's World Cup finals 2-0 on aggregate. The Czechs, who had not qualified for the World Cup since becoming an independent nation after their last appearance as Czechoslovakia in Italy in 1990, needed only a draw after winning the first leg in Oslo 1-0.
With all time leading scorer Jan Koller with 40 shots, as well as some of the above-named stars, the Czechs hope for much success in Germany in the summer of ‘06.
