Club Deportivo Chivas
Out of an insult, the Chivas have Become one of the Greatest Clubs in Mexico and all of the Americas.
Birth of the Holy Flock
Club Deportivo of Guadalajara was founded in 1906 by their first manager, the Belgian, Edgar ‘Belgo’ Everaert. The nickname “Chivas” (an eight-headed monster and she-goat in Spanish) was used originally by opposing teams as an insult. However, the start of that name coincided with a period of great success in 1948, and was therefore viewed as a good luck charm, and the moniker has remained.
Success From the Outset
In 1908 they win the first of 13 amateur titles. In 1956, the Argentinean trainer, Donald Ross arrives with the intent of bringing a long sought after championship in the 1956/57 season. In the first game they defeated Necaxa 1 to 0 with a goal from the legendary Chava Reyes (who holds the record for most goals in team history with 122). They also defeated Club America 7 to 0 (the most lopsided victory in the history of the Classic). January 3rd, 1957, a historic date, Guadalajara wins its first Championship with an unforgettable header by Reyes.
Modern Champions
In the summer of 1997 the Chivas won their 10th Championship, 6 to 1 against the Monarchs of Morelia. The following year, they defeated San Lorenzo of Argentina to win the Copa Coliseo. And in 1999, in a match between Mexico’s most triumphant teams, defeated Cruz Azul to take home the Copa Estrella del Milenio – the Star of the Millennium Cup. On June 14th, 2005, at the Chocolate Box in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a match that ended violently, the Guadalajara side defeated Boca Juniors by an aggregate 4 to 0 to qualify to their first semifinals of the Liberators Cup!
Centenary Celebration
After making it to the semifinals of the Clausura 2006, the Chivas wanted to celebrate their 100th Birthday with a championship - they got their wish on Sunday, December 10th, as Adolfo 'Bofo' Bautista broke a 1-1 draw in the 70th minute to give his side the 2-1 victory at Toluca, the 11th league crown for the Guadalajara club, also making them Mexico's most successful team!
