Bayern Munich
Germany’s Greatest, Bayern Munich is arguably the Best Known European Club Today
Rise from the Start
The story begins in February 1900 with Franz John, a Berliner, and the 18 names on the club's corporate charter, the first of many Bayern players to come. The team's rise began in 1907, when the Bayern Reds moved to their new home, the Bayern Ground on Munich's Leopoldstrasse.
Local opposition team, FC Wacker, found out which way things were heading with an 8-1 defeat in the opening match. Bayern's first real peak came in 1910, when the team became Eastern Region Champions. The following year Bayern defended their title undefeated, raising more than a few smiles. By then they had a national player in the squad. Max 'Gaberl' Gablonsky. After that, things moved quickly.
By 1920, Bayern had 700 members and had become what it is today: Munich's biggest football club. In 1926, the team won the South German championship. In 1932 they won their first piece of silverware: the National Championship— defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0! It would be 25 years before they needed to make room in the trophy case for another trophy: the German Cup of 1957 – which the Munich squad would collect 12 – more than any other club!
Beckenbauer and the European Glory
1967 saw ‘der Kaiser’, Franz Beckenbauer, and his Munich mates hoist the Cup Winners Cup (their first European trophy) after a 1 to 0 triumph over the Scottish Rangers. In 1972, Die Bayern quickly proved they belonged with the best not only in Germany but also in Europe, winning the domestic cup after their first Bundesliga season.
Bundesliga and the Champions League
After winning their third consecutive Bundesliga Title in 1974, with Paul "Afro-Paule" Breitner on their side, Bayern München accomplished what no other German team had done before: crushed Atletico of Madrid 5 to 1 to hold their first European Cup: the UEFA Champions Cup – which they won the next two seasons! After defeating AS Saint-Etienne 1 to 0 to win the Champions League in 1976, the Reds squared off against Brazilian Champions Cruzeiro in the Intercontinental Cup, winning the South American tournament final 2 to 0! Since the 1970’s, the team has remained at or near the top of the Bundesliga table and a European power. On May 14th, 2005, the Bavarians said goodbye to the famous Olympic Stadium by hoisting their 19th Bundesliga Trophy.
'06
On April 30th, 2006, A brilliant late save from captain Oliver Kahn ensured that Claudio Pizarro's second-half goal was enough for Bayern Munich to beat Eintracht Frankfurt and the Reds took home the DFB Pokal Cup - their 13th German Cup conquest!
Moreover, May 7th the Reds drew 1-1 with Kaiserslautern and won their second straight Bundesliga title--20th league championship in their history!
