Argentina: One of the Most Triumphant Nations in the World of Soccer
The Beginning
The story of Argentinean soccer kicks off in the mid 19th Century, when English and Italian travelers introduced the game to the South American country. A few of the biggest clubs include: River Plate, Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and Velez Sarsfield. The first official match played outside of Great Britain was between Argentina and Uruguay in 1901; and in 1910, even though the tournament only included two other nations: Chile and Uruguay, Argentina was the host and Champion of the very first Championship competition in South America!
Maradona and the Glory
There is no doubt Argentina is one of the greatest Soccer nations. The White and Blue have won an incredible 14 Copa America Championships! In 1978, Argentina was the host and World Cup Champions, defeating the Netherlands 3 to 1. One of the greatest players in the history of soccer – Diego Maradona – led the Argentine side to a 3 to 2 victory over West Germany in 1986 for their second World Cup!
Modern Triumphs
In Athens, 2004, Argentina won their first Gold Medal. Without giving up a single goal, the Argentineans attacked their opponents with 17 shots, 8 by Boca Juniors’ Carlos Tevez. Since the competition's creation in 1977, Argentina won five titles of the World Youth Championship, in 1979 (with Maradona), 1995, 1997, 2001, and 2005. The Albicelestes also won the Confederations Cup in 1992. On June 8th, 2005, the Argentina National Soccer Team qualified to their 14th World Cup! Argentina has the pride of having fielded some of the best soccer teams and players in history. That is why their National Team is known and revered the world over.
