Kappa
Although Kappa is known today for their modernized look, their company dates back to almost one hundred years ago. In 1916, Kappa started off as a soccer and underwear company that was located in Italy.
Their target market in the sixties was focused on the trend setting youth culture. Casual styles as well as an informal dress code were the hip looks of this decade, and Kappa decided to realign their business strategy with this concept in mind. This modification resulted in two new lines called Robe di Kappa and Jesus Jeans which was a great success as well as a good indicator of how successful the company would become in the future.
The company’s unmistakable logo that is still used today is not only a representation of the company itself, but it also signifies the corporation’s belief in equality of the sexes. The logo is a profile view of a man and a woman sitting back to back, while holding each other up. This logo is an illustration that stood for the newly modernized outlook on life during the sixties.
The seventies and eighties were extremely successful decades for Kappa. One of the top selling polo shirts of today, the Robe di kappa Pique Polo, was first released in 1973. Shortly after this successful line, Kappa started to tap into the soccer market. Soon they would be sponsoring the world-renowned Italian soccer team Juventus we know of today. By the late eighties, Kappa became known as one of Europe’s top selling sportswear brands in the world.
A.C. Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, and Roma were three top international soccer teams who sported the famous logo. Barcelona and Red Star Belgrade had jumped on the bandwagon by the nineties. By 1996, Kappa’s logo was seen by millions while being worn by Juventus who won three Champions League finals.
Recently, Kappa has continued to carry on its legacy of having top athletes in the soccer world wear their brand. Cobi Jones, who played for the US National team as well as the LA Galaxy, was another performer who sported the Kappa brand. He wore Kappa boots when he had a record-breaking season with the LA Galaxy. The Italian National Soccer team revealed the new Kappa Kombat shirt during the Euro 2000 tournament.
In 2002, Kappa continued to expand their horizons and decided to enter the Danish market. This decision proved to be extremely profitable for the company. F.C. Arhus was the first Danish team they decided to sponsor. However, their most attention-getter sponsorship was a four year agreement with F.C. Kobenhavn, the current league champions. This was one of Denmark’s largest soccer sponsorship thus far.
Kappa continues to come out with its trend-setting leisurewear designs while keeping its active sportswear image as well. They take pride in their brand and logo while making sure they sponsor athletes and teams who share this same attribute.
